Mike O'Leary: Storyteller in Residence at Treloar College

For three months of 2006 Mike had the privilege of being storyteller in residence at Treloar College. [The Story of a Storytelling Residency by Janice Hopwood from Storylines, Summer 2006]

Treloar College is a Beacon status specialist college for disabled students aged 16 and over, based in the outskirts of Alton, Hampshire. It has very high standards.

The mission of the Treloar Trust is to provide opportunities for physically disabled young people to learn, develop independence, and to realise their potential - through centres of excellence at school, college and in the community beyond.

Mike felt that storytelling fitted this ethos; he really enjoyed the residency and felt privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Treloar students.

At the end of the residency, Janice Hopwood, Art's coordinator, scripted a play, called "Perception", based on the students improvisation work - which was itself based around Mike's work with traditional story "motifs". The play toured various venues in the south.
